I would be very grateful for help in dating the attached photos and - if possible - colouring.

The photos are both of the same family and I think that the lady with the fruit in her hat is my Gtx2 Grandmother who lived from 1830 to 1891.

Many thanks

Tilly

Hi Tilly
Dont think that these people are who you think they are(re: gr gr granny).I am no expert but it defenitely looks post 1900 to me,maybe 1905 or thereabouts :-\
Jim,China or Prue will give you a better date but the ladies attire especially in the second photo looks pre WW1, but then again Im not an expert :)

Ps.Im probably completely off the ball here! ;D

Hi Annette

That's a shame - if it's not Gt Gt Granny, I mean!! :'(  It looks just like her - I have another photo of her which I am sure about, so maybe it's one of her daughters with her family..... ???

I am attaching an image of the back of the card - maybe this will help to date?

Thank you very much for your help.

Tilly :)

Hi Tilly...I think the divided back postcard was introduced after 1907.

Have to agree with Annette, the date for the 1st. being the earliest at around 1907 I would suggest, the 2nd. being 1910 - 12.The lady at the back is wearing a masculine style jacket, shirt & tie, commonly seen on women of the Suffragette movement.
Lovely photos, they look a very happy family.

jim
Edit:just seen Carol's post..make that 1902 Carol,1907 USA.That's what makes me think the 1st. is around this time as it states on the back Inland post only, some countries including the USA didn't accept these until the later date.

Agree with Jim although I might push the first one a couple of years earlier, just personal opinion :)

The suffragette suit was introduced in October 1910, so the second card can't be from earlier than that, and may of course be a bit later depending on how fashion-conscious the girls were. The suit went out of fashion in 1915.

Cheers,

hi Tilly, maybe it is a daughter especially as you say there is a resemblance.
Hopefully you will find out!

Thank you VERY much to all of you for the information.

It is very interesting, especially as I had always supposed that the two photos were taken during the same holiday.... but, now I look more carefully, I think that the girl (second from the right, front row in the 2nd photograph) could be the same girl, a few years older, as the one on the left of the first photo in front of the fruit-hat lady!  One thing that had always struck me about this girl (especially in the first photo) is that she is the spitting image of....... ME at the about the same age!! Strange!

I love these photos and am going to go through my family tree to see if I can work out who they are!!

Thank you again for all your help.

Tilly

ps - I am now going to get out my photos of my (hopefully) Gt Gt Grandparents and post them on a new thread, just in case I'm wrong there too ;)
