Hello,

We're researching our Kennedy family from the village of Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada who is believed to have emigrated from Northumberland, England shorlty before 1820.

Anyone researching Kennedys from Northumberland?

Parents unknown
Brother / sisters unknown
Wife: Mary Dixon (married 1820 in Ontario)

 Dan,

Starting with basics.... It is likely that Hugh was baptised somewhere in Northumberland.

In the relevant era Northumberland had about 100 Parish churches ( Parish = Anglican religion) and many churches of other faiths, eg Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, etc..

Baptisms for all these churches/chapels are accessible, some on line, but most if not all, available in Northumberland County Record Office and larger libraries. But in the main in date order and not searchable by surname.

So with not much to go on- a difficult target !

Elsewhere you mentioned that Hugh came from the north of Northumberland. What clue do you have on his root place ?

What name did he give to his first son  and second daughter ?

Hi Michael,

There's a possible first son named William (unconfirmed); if not first son is named John and the second oldest daughter is named Mary.

We're getting closer though as we get a better feel for researching Northumberland from Ontario, Canada.  It's a learning curve.

Someone online says Kennedy is not an English name, but Dixon is.  I'm seeing Dixon being researched in Durham, England (?)  They say our Kennedys likely came from Ary or Galloway, Scotland.

Any research tips welcomed.

---------------------------------------

Hugh Kennedy & Mary (Dixon) Kennedy had 10 children; 5 born in Markham, Ontario, Canada and 5 born in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. It's unknown if both Hugh Kennedy and Mary Dixon immigrated to Canada together, but they were married here the spelling of the surname "Canada".  The spelling of the Kennedy surname on the 1861 London township, Middlesex County, Ontario census is "Canadey" and the spelling of the Kennedy surname on the headstones including Will / Probates is "Kennady".

Husband: Hugh Kennedy b. 1791 Eng (likely northern Northumberland) d. 1864 Birr, Ontario, Canada

Can you tell me if this means anything to you K O.

I have been looking for the Kennedy Clan in Buffalo with a view to trying to re-establish family connections, but so far without success.  :-[

If it does mean something to you, then we are related! The Mary Johnson (nee Kennedy) mentioned was my paternal Gt Grandmother. Her brother Matthew went to Canada.

Bummer!  :'( We may or may not be connected. Kennedy: probably not. I don't recognize a Hugh in our line. Depends on the Dixon connection, if she was born with parents of Robinson Dixon and Elizabeth Laming who are the parents of Harrit Dixon born in 1791 in Kingston Upon Hull, York, England... then yes!   ;D Although, oddly enough, I did live in Niagara Falls NY for 12 yrs which is just 1/2 hr or so away from Buffalo.  Will check into it later.  Rhonda
