John Smith - genealogist hell! *COMPLETED*
« on: Saturday 15 May 10 09:57 BST (UK) »
I suppose it could be worse - could it??

I've caved and ordered his son's marriage certificate.

Who knew there were SO MANY John Smiths in New Zealand!  I think I have stared at every single John Smith online record today.

Anyone out there related to me through John Smith??

:-)

Out of all my names sadly I don't think I have a SMITH LOL  ;D
How did you narrow them down to get the right one?
Where did they live

I see that Newbe has Smiths in her research - I might have to question her  :-)

The Smith I know is my great-grandfather, and he was at the tail end of a long line of children, so apparently his father started naming them after his army mates.

My great-grandfather is Somerset Ward Smith, which became Ward Somerset Smith, and I'm told he and his siblings all took their middle names and hyphenated them to no longer be plain Smiths.  Much easier to find!

He married Marion Alice Messenger.

His online BDM birth listing names his parents - John and Anne Smith.  I was hoping to find some more info before sending away for the certificate, but I gave up!

I'm not sure where Ward was born - I believe he was in Hawkes Bay most of the time, and perhaps some time in Auckland.

I'm about to start looking for his burial location.

... and ... found Ward and Marion Smith on the Hastings cemeteries cremation records.

I so hate the waiting time between ordering and receiving a printout from BDM!

I got an Australian one a couple of nights ago, which gave a downloaded image straight to email in about two minutes flat!

Ta-dah!

His son's marriage certificate was most helpful.

John Smith, Captain of North Mayo militia, retired to New Zealand in 1875, buried in Karori Cemetery Servicemen's Section.  1821-1899

Wife = Anne Cameron.

I do have some Smiths in Australia but would need to check my tree. My John Smith might be English but not sure.
Just reading back through your thread I do not think mine are connected.

Good luck with your hunt

No help I'm afraid. But you have my sympathy. I have a John Smith, a Fred Smith and two Elizabeth Smith's -  one from my mum's side, the other from my dad's  ::) - all living in Liverpool around the same time and originating in Ireland around the same time.

Head, bang, wall  :o
