James MOORE birth - Jersey
« on: Saturday 15 May 10 21:41 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for the birth and first marriage of James Moore birth abt 1805 in Jersey.

In the 1851 census [HO 107/2179], place of birth appears to be Jersey.  I cannot read the place of birth for either him or for wife Grace (second wife).  See attached. He married Grace in 1847 in Liverpool.

Any insight greatly appreciated!

Hi

I would guess that for James is says Jersey B S  and that this could mean British Subject. I've seen it in full before but not as initials. As for Grace I would say it's North Wales, Holyhead.

I can look for a birth next week when the Archive is open.

Truly appreciate the help, Stewart.

The earliest census reference I have for James (1805+/-) is the one from 1851 where he is with his second wife Grace and two children, the oldest from an earlier marriage.

Hi Kate

Well the bad news is that having searched all the Parishes, I can't see a baptism for a James Moor/Moore around this period.

Do any of the later census indicate a birth place?

Thank you ever so much Stewart for taking the time.

Unfortunately, James must have died in the intervening years between the 1851 and the 1861 census.  His wife Grace is seen as a widow on the 1861 census [RG 9/Piece: 2669; Folio: 45; Page: 32]  Interesting to note neither James (b abt 1836) or John (b abt 1850) is listed here. James 1836  was married by then to Catherine McGinn (married in 1859).  James and Grace were married in 1847, Parish Church of Liverpool.

Not sure where to go from here.

I have had another thought. The Jersey "equivalent" of Moor/Moore could be Moure. I'll have a look for that one.

Thank you for your kindness. On the marriage certificate for James and Grace, the father for James is given as John Moore, Rigger.

Kind regards,

I've had another look but haven't found anything significant.

I did see a James Moore baptism in 1815 but didn't note the parents (which I will do). I wonder if he added 10 years to his age?

Hello Stewart,

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he added 10 years.  The Moore men seem to have done that in various census records over the years.

James must have died b/w 1851 and 1861 since Grace appears as a widow in later returns. At the time of their marriage in 1847 they were both in Liverpool, he was living on Cockspur Rd and she was on Westmoreland.

I really appreciate your time.

Kind regards,
Kate
