If this is the size sent to you by FindMyPast you should ask for your money back. If it was larger (and therefore at a higher resolution) you need to cut the sections separately, and paste into new files, and them post them. If you don't have a suitable imaging package you could use either Paint or the snipping tool (Vista and Windows 7 only I believe).

The first reads:

He enlisted 14th November 1854 under age

Total Service allowed to 31st March 1857 is two years and seventy seven days (Signed) J L……Major Depot Battalion

You really need his date of birth as it is hard to tell if ‘Under Age’ is against the first entry only or the first two.

The second reads:

GC (Good Conduct) Pay @ 3d …9th March 1871
GC Pay @ 4d……………………9th March 1873

Promoted Sergeant………………16th April 1874
Appointed Color Sergeant………16th April 1874 (to) 31st December 1874
Reverted to Sergeant………………1st January 1875
Transferred to the permanent staff of the 7th ?? ?? Militia per authority dated Horse Guards wc (?)(week commencing?) 18th December 1874 No. A/7/650 ??..?? D 682
Transferred (to the Militia) (as) Sergeant 1st January 1875 (to) 11 February 1876

He reverted to Sergeant so he could join the permanent staff of the Militia. Have you found him in 1881? It will be a clue to which Militia he joined. Lancashire had seven Militia regiments. The 7th Royal Lancashire Militia were based in Bury.

Thanks Ken,
It makes a bit more sense now.

He was 95th Regiment of Foot all his service, except a mention of ?20th Regiment on 1st
childs birth registration which may be an error, born in 1835, September which makes him 18 on enlistment, is this under age?

Missing from census in 1851? family all  accounted  for
In 1871 he was in Military Barracks in Alverstoke, Hampshire age 35
In 1876 His third child was born in 'BURY' (I wondered why he was here)
In 1881 hes in Worksop, a railway porter and Chelsea pensioner age 45.
He died in 1883 of Pneumonia in Widnes, a foreman at the Midland Railway Goods Yard.

P.S. Just looked and the Lancashire Fusiliers were formerly 20th Regiment Foot (East Devonshire)
David was originally from Suffolk. His wife was with him much of this time.
I used to think the ancestors couldnt have travelled much away from their homes, how wrong I was  :o

There is no link between him and the Lancashire Fusiliers except that they both settled in Bury (at different times).

Maybe it does not say 'Under Age'. In that case the two periods as a Private may be when he was in the depot and then sent out to the battalion. On 14th January 1855 the battalion was in the Crimea. If not I don’t know why they are split.

It will give his age on enlistment on page 1. If he was 18 he was not under age.

Woopee!

They just got me the rest of the record and are looking into putting a save on purchased records onsite.

He was 17 years 10 months on attestation in 1854 and intended to live in Bury on his disharge in 1876.
A form saying he was fit and no disability was signed for the Commander of the Horse Guards? can you explain what connection is with these please, sorry not very good with military stuff.

Thanks for your patience

Horse Guards was the equivalent of today's MOD - they ran the army. At other times they went by the name of the War Department or War Office.

If looks as if his 18th birthday was 14th January 1855. They gave him the rank of an under age Private rather than as a Boy. So they split his time as a Private into what counted towards his person and what did not.
