Hi,
I am trying to find information on Gladys Irene Calder who married Hugh Ferguson Stewart about 1923 in Nokomis, Saskatchewan and who died in 1992 in Red Deer, Alberta.

Hi King,

Marriages are the responsibility of each Province in Canada, like the other vital records. I am unsure as to how the Province of Saskatchewan handles their BMD, but there are restrictions on each of those. You may want to contact the major public libraries in that province such as in Regina and Saskatoon and contact the reference (or with any luck genealogy) librarians that would help you with finding a marriage notice and other info if you are looking for that. The web addies are shown below:

http://www.saskatoonlibrary.ca/

Hope these sites will be of help,

Just so you know I was able to find obituaries for Hugh and Gladys in Saskatoon's paper...I can look it up on one of my days off this week if you'd like.

As well there is a local history book for Nokomis that I look through and see if there is any mention of them.

Jeff

Hi,

JDC, many thanks for the links, I will certainly give them a try.
Jeff, Detail from the obituaries will be gratefully recieved. I have some information on Hugh's early life and some information on his WW1 record but I know nothing about his wife, Gladys. Whatever you can find will be gratefully recieved.

Many Thanks and Regards

Hi King,

Good work Jeff.

If Hugh fought in WW1, you should be able to get his service record from the federal government via the National Library and Archives and Canada - if he fought with the Canadian forces. Here is the link for that: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/lac-bac/search-recherche/anc.php?Language=eng. You didn't say how long he had been in Canada prior to the marriage. Can we assume he either was born here or came here when he was very young? Hope this helps,

Hi JDC,
Many thanks for your interest. It was remiss of me not to give more information on Hugh. In the 1911 census of Ireland he was at his parents house in Co. Londonderry, Ireland and described as an 18 Year old student. I have a copy of his Attestation Papers, sworn at Calgary, Canada on 3 Jun 1915. I believe he was severely wounded in 1916 and invalidated out of the army. However I am more interested in trying to find out something about his wife but any extra information on Hugh will be gratefully recieved.

Thanks and Regards.

Hi King,

I realize you want to find out more about Hugh's wife.  Now I am assuming now that the pair met after his return to Canada and their marriage date. I would contact the public libraries in the area and she if she's is listed in the phone and other directories during that time and again for the pair after thier marriage. Perhaps that would indicate thier movements in the area. There's likely a library where the pair lived as well. At the same time we'll see what Jeff digs up in Saskatoon.

Cheers,

JDC

So I went down to the library and was able to locate the obituaries for Hugh and Gladys at the local library.  Hugh passed away December 23, 1977 in Red Deer (an address close to my MIL lol), and Gladys died in Oct 7, 1992 at the age of 95.

Hugh had 4 sister, all overseas (wonder if you descentant of one of them) lol, and 2 daughters.

The obituary in 1992 lists more details if you wish I can send you a PM with their names so you can look them up.

http://www.canada411.ca

If Gladys was buried beside her husband in Red Deer, it may be an idea to contact the cemetery in the city to see if they are indeed buried there.

For more information, please contact Cemetery Services at 403-342-8303 or e-mail cemeteryservices@reddeer.ca.

The City of Red Deer is a member of the Western Canada Cemetery Association.

Hope this helps..

Jeff
