Do you intend to restrict your study to the UK? If so I see that your one-name study will be a small one as there were only 42 Michaelsons in the 1881 census, distributed as shown on the map from the Surname Atlas (
www.archersoftware.co.uk
) shown below.
There were 221 people called Michaelson in the Office of National Statistics database, which contains a list of surnames in use in England, Wales and the Isle of Mann in September 2002.
