Abb. Spinner ? 1841 census
« on: Monday 17 May 10 15:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have someone in the 1841 census with an occupation that's difficult to decipher.

Ann Way, 75, b. in county
Gidleigh Village, Gidleigh Devon
HO 107/263/10 folio 4, pg 3

I looked at the nearby pages, and found an Abb. Spinner in much clearer writing.  I think that must be what's written next to Ann's name also.  If anyone could double check, it would be much appreciated.

If it is Abb Spinner - any ideas about this occupation please?  I'm not sure what Abb could mean.

thanks,
Charlotte

Hello

Abb means Weft.

The Warp is generally not always the parallel threads that is mounted on the loom before the weaving begins. The Weft is the thread that crosses and intersects with the warp.

From the Oxford English Dictionary
Abb The woof or weft in a web
1774 Act 14 Geo. III, c. xxv, Frauds are frequently committed by persons employed in the woollen manufactory..by the weavers withholding part of the woof or abb yarn delivered to them. 1835  PARTINGTON  Brit. Cycl. s.v. Abb, the yarn of a weaver's warp, whence the wool of which it is made is termed abb-wool.
