Dublin Schools
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 07:23 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm wondering if anyone can help with a bit of information please.
My Great Uncle, Francis Townsend, was sent to school in Ireland from Scotland (his mother was Irish from Co. Kerry)
I have his army papers which state that he attended:

Howth Rd School Dublin 1896-1901.
Merchant Taylors Dublin, 1901-1905.
Skerries C.S. College 1906.
apprenticeship at sea. 1907-1909.

Is it possible to find out who holds the pupil records for these places?

Also I have found various Merchant Taylor schools on the net but not the one in Dublin. Is it still there? Actually any info at all on these schools would be handy.

Another question please...it's possible that his parents (and siblings) were in Ireland during the 1901 census (Dublin?) as I can find no trace of them on either the Scotland or England census. The LDS is not an option at the moment...any suggestions??

thanks for your time, Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,

The Merchant Taylors School was probably in, or close to, the city centre.
It might be worth while sending a note to -

Ms Deirdre Ellis-King,
City Librarian, Dublin Public Libraries,
Cumberland House, Fenian Street,
DUBLIN 2.
Tel: (01) 661 9000 Fax: (01) 676 1628 E-mail:dubcilib@iol.ie

You may need to approach Pearse Street as the other two schools are in the North
Dublin area. I cannot find their e-mail address but the people at Fenian Street should send you a note of it.

Sorry Christopher, I can't quite see the significance of St Andrews College.  Was it known as something else previously?

I have never heard back from Dublin City Public Libraries & Archive  :-[ I should probably try them again, but it's very disheartening.

Sylvia,

I owe you an explanation and maybe a small apology. I linked to the title of your subject as I felt it unnecessary to open a new topic about the schools of Dublin and the history of those schools. There appears to be little of the history of Dublin schools online so it looks as though I may have to travel to that city, spend a few day there and do some research on this interesting subject

I will keep you in the picture.

Best Wishes, Christopher

Hi Christopher
I thought you and others might be interested in the reply I got from my 2nd email to the Dublin City Library:

Thank you for your enquiry.

Irish primary and secondary school records are usually held at the National
Archives of Ireland, Bishop Street, Dublin 8.

The website is: www.nationalarchives.ie

The e-mail address is: mail[at]nationalarchives.ie

I would suggest you could contact the National Archives of Ireland.

Trusting that the above information will be of help.

Best Wishes with your family history research,
