Mystery of Gerald Thompson
« on: Thursday 20 May 10 16:06 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I hope someone might be able to solve this mystery and save me purchasing a birth certificate!

I am hoping to find the marriage of Gerald Thompson's parents.
His birth was registered during the June quarter of 1913 (tynemouth) and his mother's maiden name is shown as 'Miller'
He married a Emma Ward on the 4th April 1931 in Delaval Parish Church, giving his address as 26 Bywell Terrace, Seaton Sluice and his father as John Robert Thompson (deceased) a former coal miner.
There is a death for a John Robert Thompson (between 1913 and 1931) in the Tynemouth registration district during the December quarter of 1918 (age 52); this may be him.

However, I just cannot find a marriage between a Thompson and a Miller, and would love to know who Gerald's mother was.

Can anyone help please!!

Thank you

Sue

 Sue,

I personally try to avoid buying copy certs ( I don't want them, just want the crucial info from them) and try to get details by e.g. tracing church records.

However I think your's is a classic example where there is no clever cheap quick alternative. I think it would be quicker and cheaper in the long run to buy Gerald's birth cert.

Did you look in Scotland for his parents marriage ? ( Although a strong Northumberland, Durham and Cumberland surname, it was also evident in Southern Scotland ! )

Gerald is a Saint of the Catholic Church, Northumberland-born, became Bishop of Mayo, in Ireland. So maybe there was an Irish connection ?

If the J R Thompson death (1918) aged 52 you found is the "right" one then he was born ( anywhere in UK ? ) circa 1866... he could have married as early, say, mid 1880s ?

Hi All,
Many thanks for your help! I have found Gerald's parents at last! They were John Robert Thompson and Annie Miller (Annie's name gleaned from registrars). However, still cannot find a marriage!
Annie was the illegitimate daughter of Jemima Miller, daughter of Ann Miller.

Thanks again for all your help, more aid needed though.. see new request!

Thanks

Sue

Jun 1894 Tynemouth Jun 1894
Ann Miller Laidler to possibly John Thompson

Ann M Laidler (father's surname Laidler) married John Thompson ( father's surname Thompson)
