Thomas Taylor Mary Moore Marriage
« on: Thursday 20 May 10 20:07 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to find the marriage of a Thomas Taylor to a Mary Moore circa 1880 probably in Co Antrim or possibly Co Down.

Any help gratefully received.

Regards

Have you searched the civil index yet?
See here for what details are in Irish mariage certificates and how to search civil index-

Hi Aghadowey,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes I've tried the civil index but can't find anything to match up.

Where did you estimate the date from? perhaps marriage a bit earlier or later?

Hi Aghadowey,

It's just a guess really; I found what I think might be Mary living with three of her sons on the 1911 census in Holywood Urban, County Down at which time she is said to be a 53-year-old widow who was married for 21 years and had 8 children with 5 still living.  It states she and her eldest son William, aged 30, were born in Antrim. The youngest son, Earnest/Ernest was 13 in 1911 so her husband must have still been alive circa 1897-8 meaning the earliest they could have married would have perhaps been 1876.

Thanks again.

Hi Maryderry,

Thank you so much for your help - I'm sure you've found the right pairing for me!

Can I ask how you found it?  I'm trying to get my head around Irish records but I've never really looked into them before.

I think Thomas must have died 1900-02 and I'm sure this couple had 8 children 5 of whom were still living at the time of the 1911 census.  The only ones I know of for sure are William Taylor (born circa 1881 in Antrim), Reginald Taylor (born circa 1890 in Down) and E(a)rnest Taylor (born circa 1897 in Down).

I've looked for births on the Irish Civil Index Aghadowey kindly pointed me towards; there are a few Williams that could match and one Reginald registered in Belfast in 1890 that could match.  I couldn't find an Ernest but I did see a Thomas Ernest Taylor that could be him.  I also found a Mary Moorhead Taylor born 1892 and I think it's possible she was their daughter.  As the Civil Index doesn't give parents names though I'm just stabbing around in the dark with these.

It's such a shame there's no 1891 census to see as that would have been an enormous help.  Hopefully I can find them on the 1901 when it's released.

Any suggestions on where to go from here would be great.

I managed to buy a transcription of the marriage record and it gave me the following information:

Thomas Taylor, Carpenter, of the Parish of Shankill Belfast married Mary Moorhead of Cook on 4th Dec 1880 at Ballycairn Presbyterian, Lisburn, Drumbo, Down.  No ages are given or mothers names but Thomas' father is given as Thomas Taylor, Carpenter, and Mary's as William Moorhead, Coastguard.

I searched for their 8 children but can't seem to find birth records so I'm stumped on that one now.  Any ideas gratefully received.

Irish civil marriage certificates never include mother's names and ages (uuntil fairly recently) usually given as 'full age' or in the case of someone underage "minor" or perhaps age in years.
