Temperance Hotel, Ballyrobert, Craigavad
« on: Thursday 20 May 10 20:52 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for any information on the Temperance Hotel in Ballyrobert, Craigavad, Co Down.  I've looked at a map and as Craigavad looks like too small a place to have another town or village in it I looked for a st or rd and found a Ballyrobert Road nearby and am now wondering if it could have been there?  If anyone knows anything about it I'd be grateful for the information.

Regards

It this anything to do with your Taylors?
"Mrs. M.A. TAYLOR, Aghaderg, of Scarva; post mistress, grocer, hardware, news & shipping agent & ran a temperance hotel in 1910" and "Robert TAYLOR, Aghaderg, of Main St, Scarva; owner of Temperence Hotel & village post master c. 1910 & also a grocer, stationer, bookseller china & glassware daler, emigration agent & sold farm implements."

Hi Aghadowey,

I found exactly the same entry and have been wondering if the MA Taylor is Mary and she was maybe Mary Ann??  Do you think the Temperance Hotel talked about here could be the Ballyrobert Temperance Hotel?  I have no idea of the geography but it does seem like a bit of a coincidence if it's not them.

On the 1911 census return I spoke of Mary is listed as a small shopkeeper and I think grocer but the second word is crossed out.

Not sure where you are getting Ballyrobert from but 1910 details are for M.A. Taylor running a Temperance Hotel, post office, etc. in Scarva:

Hi Aghadowey,

Thanks for that information; that at least rules that one out of being the Ballyrobert Temperance Hotel as Scarva is some distance away on a map.

The census return I've found states the family were living at No 6 Ballyrobert St/Township in Holywood in 1911 so it doesn't look like this MA Taylor could be her.  I had a look for MA Taylor in Scarva on the 1911 census though and drew a blank so it is still a bit of a mystery.
