Could someone please check 1871 census for Joseph Walker and family.  On 1861 census Joseph was aged 36 Coal Dealer born York, living Lowther Street, York.  Wife Mary aged 36 also born York.  Their younger children were George aged 12, Theresa aged 10, Mary Ann aged 8, Sarah aged 3 and Joseph aged 1, all born York.  I would like to know if there were any more children and also whether the family were still in York.  I have checked 1881 but there are no obvious choices in York.  If someone could let me have details of the family, it would be most appreciated.

With grateful thanks.

Zephyr

Hi Zephyr,

I eventually found a family which seems to fit, but they are transcribed as "Halker", and I must admit, looking at the census entry, it does look like Halker....anyway...

1871 - living at Dales Court, St. Crux, York - ref  RG10/4751 Folio 12 Page 13

Joseph Halker, 42, Coal Dealer, born York
Mary      wife,    42                     born York
George   son     22  Striker         born York
Mary Ann  dau   17                        "
Sarah        dau   13                        "
Joseph      son    10                        "
John          son     3                         "

There is a family living at the same address in 1881, this time indexed and looking like Walker - remaining children's names and ages about right, so I'm guessing the 1871 must be right too....we hope....

1881, living at Dales Court, York, Ref  RG11/4724 Folio 10 Page 14

Joseph Walker, 53, Labourer,
Mary, 49
Joseph 18
John 13            - all born York.

Hope it helps,
Yorkslass

Hello Yorkslass

Thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to find the family for me - it has been a big help.  I didn't know about the son John - so many thanks.

Also thanks for finding them on 1881 census.  I must have missed them - probably been staring at a screen for too long!

My GreatGrandfather married Mary Ann Walker in 1873 so it's nice to find her on the censuses prior to her marriage.

With grateful thanks for all your help.

Best wishes.

Zephyr
