« on: Thursday 27 May 10 14:47 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Looking for the bapt of Joseph/Samuel Showell born abt 1844/1845.

1851 census states Joseph Showell born  Tintwistle.

Other records state Samuel Showell born Woodhead.

Will also post this on the Derbyshire board.

Any help appreciated.

Twintwistle (pronounced Tinsel) is at the foot of the Woodhead pass, so I guess either would be correct as a place of birth.

Thanks Lizzie

I didn't know it was pronounced in that way, that explains why it was written as Tinsel in 1851.

Hi KR

Have no idea why it is called Tinsel, but obviously called that for a long time if it's written like that on the 1851 census. .  We living in Hollingworth in 1965-68 and our daughter went to Tintwistle school.  It was a church school and all children from 5-11 were in one class (from memory but there could have been two classrooms ).  What I do know is that in the middle of the classroom was an old wood burning stove, which kept the place warm in the winter.

The school sounds idyllic.

Looking at the map Mottram in Longendale could be another possibility for his baptism.

Hello KR
My local library has records for St Michaels in Mottram , the main parish church and quite close to Tintwistle . I thought I would give it a try for 1844/45 but no luck I am afrarid .

Looking for the mother of Samuel Showell, born 1845 Woodhead Derbyshire. Mother's name unknown, but thru family rumors was married a few times, once to a baron but that marriage failed, Samuel ended up in Lancashire near Manchester and became a coal miner, married Sarah Berry and had a family, but the mystery, who were his parents?

Welcome to Rootschat jeffierich.  I'm not sure this is the right thread to post a request about Samuel Showell, it might be better moved to the Derbyshire board.

I have looked for births of Samuel Showell between 1840 and 1850 and there are none in Woodhead, Derbyshire.  I decided to look at the census, where you found him as a miner and on only one census, does he give his place of birth as Woodhead, Derbyshire. On 1891 census he just gives Derbyshire as his place of birth, 1881 he gives Woodhead, Derbyshire, 1871 he states Newton Heath, Lancashire, 1901 he says he was born at Salter Brook, Derbyshire.  There is only 1 Samuel Showell on 1911 census, and he is married to an Elizabeth, so not the one you are looking for.

The mystery is not only who were his parents, but where was he actually born.  It would seem that he was born in Derbyshire and Woodhead and Salters Brook are next to each other, so that's the possible birth place, but it's also quite possible that Showell was not his original birth name.  It could be the surname of one of the men his mother married.
