Cause of Discharge from 1st Life Guards
« on: Friday 28 May 10 10:30 BST (UK) »

I have now found  GGuncle's WW1 Medal Roll Index Card and am curious regarding the cause of Discharge.
I would appreciate help with this please.

 It reads, Cause of Discharge :  P.392 (XX1) K. R.
Also, at the bottom of the card is written "Form C at H 19.5.19
What is form C and does H stand for Headquarters?

 Many thanks

Hi Siobhan

Paragraph 392 (sub-section xxi) (of) Kings Regulations - Termination of his x term of engagement. where x is usually 1st or 2nd. It implies he was a Regular. His first term would expire after 12 years, his second either after a period in the Reserves or an extension to his first '12'. This is from KRs of 1914. He would have come under those of 1917, so there may be a difference. Also knowing his age would help. First periods of engagement usually ended at the age of 30 or later depending when he enlisted.

Can you post his name and number so we can have a look at the second bit? If he was in the Hussars it may Corps of Hussars, but nothing rings a bell with the Life Guards.

Hi Mike,

The Reg No's aren't too far from each other, so perhaps they did. Nicholas is the first person I have found in the family with an Army record so all very new to me,  but fascinating to read about the Regiments etc.

Hi again Ken,

I have found Nicholas' Pension records on Ancestry and from what I can make out (writing is pretty hard to decipher in places), Nicholas extended his service to 12 yrs with the ?? Colours in 1903. He was transferred to 1st Life Guards 20 1 03 as Corporal and then promoted to C of M on 6.2.03. Further promotion Acting Corp Major '04, final promotion, Sqd Corp Major ,06.

I gather this is where the extension of 12 yrs you spoke of comes in.

Hi Siobhan

The note from 1903 is him agreeing to extend his service to the full 12 years, rather than go into the Army Reserve. The end of his first engagement would have been 1911. So 1919 may have been the end of his 2nd or 3rd engagement.

It does say Form C etc. The card you have is for a Silver War Badge. Techically the war had not finished when he was discharged, hence his entitlement. So I think Form C is to do with the award of the SWB after he was discharged. He doesn't appear to have served either in the Boer War or overseas during WW1. So the SWB and possibly a medal for long service may have been his only awards. I cannot find him on Ancestry. Can you post either an image number in Ancestry or post the link (url).

You say "C of M on 6.2.03." but could it be 'C of H', i.e. Corporal Of Horse?
A

Hi Ken, again many thanks for your help. Nicholas served in South Africa from 2.12.99 -30.8.00. That's  the only overseas posting I can see in the records.

The following is Nicholas on Ancestry
British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920 Record for Nicholas Carroll starting from image 33153

Nicholas Carroll
Birth:    abt 1873 - Tipperary
Military:    1894

AND
   Nicholas Carroll
Birth:    abt 1888 - Tipperary (wrong date, right person)
Military:    1906

ainslie,

I've had  another look at the record and yes it just might be C of H. Thank you for pointing that out,
