michael manning born c1857
« on: Monday 31 May 10 14:10 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am trying to find a baptism for Michael Manning born about 1857 in Ireland.  I have no idea in which parish he was born.   I know it is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but thought i would give it a go anyway.

I found in 1871 census in England, a Michael Manning born abt 1857 in Ireland with parents Patrick and Elizabeth Manning.  I cannot confirm that this is the right family.  Michael Manning emigrated to South Africa and in particular to the then called, Transvaal, where he married a lady by the name of Catharina Magdalena du Preez.  I know that he was a gold miner, gold prospector and boiler maker.  This leads me to believe that he may have come across during the gold rush at Pilgrims Rest in 1873 or at Barberton in 1886.  His youngest child, Martha Sophia Manning was born in 1887 in Pretoria, Transvaal.
Michael died in 1955 in Durban, Natal, at the age of 98 years.  His wife had died many years before in 1911.  However, there is no death notice for Michael Manning in South Africa, only one for his wife Catharina Magdalena.  I have ordered this death notice, but am not very hopeful that it will give me too much information on Michael.

I do not know which parish to start looking for him, and i understand that passenger lists between UK and Ireland are not really available.

If anyone is searching the same line or can help me out here, i would be most appreciative.

Regards
Jackie

Did Patrick and Elizabeth have any children born in England ? (Civil registration started there in Autumn 1837)

If they did then a birth cert would at least give you Elizabeth's maiden name which might help to confirm or rule out any earlier parish records you may locate in Ireland.

all assuming of course that this is the correct Michael Manning..

Did Michael's marriage not give details on him ? (father's name, occupation etc)

Hi Shane,

No children we know of that were born in England. Marriage certificate not available, just date written in a family bible.

Not much to go on :(

where were the family located in 1871 ? I had a quick look but didnt find them..

Sometimes if you trace them forward (and sometimes back) on the English census you can sometimes get a more detailed place of birth entered. Did Patrick & Elizabeth stay on in England ?

1871 census shows in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire.
Looked for death for Patrick and Elizabeth on freebmd but nothing, nor anywhere on South African archives site.

will have a look for the family in 1871 - plus earlier and later years to see if anything useful shows up.

just wondering - were there specific clues to the fact that the family lived in England at some stage ?

sorry about delay in replying, but had to shoot out to fetch kids from school.

As far as knowing they were in England, i don't for a fact.  Just when i searched for Michael Manning, the England one came up.  I don't think he would have been still in England in 1881 census, as his last child was born in 1887 and it was their fifth child.
I also looked at passenger lists to South Africa between 1860 and 1880, but no luck either.

regards
jackie

I see the family in 1871, but no sign yet of any of them in '61 or '81

RG10 Piece 2833  Folio 69  Pages 33 & 34

 Patrick Manning     66
 Elizabeth Manning    44
 Mary Manning       17
 Michael Manning    14

  All born Ireland

I think without knowing for certain that the family were in England, or having details on Michael's parents names from other sources it's a very tenuous connection....

you are right.  i will have to wait for the death notice of Michael's wife to come, and maybe it will have a place of marriage for them or something to connect with.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
