Immigration years given on US censuses can be years out at times. It might be a good idea to send off for that 1864 birth cert. The census says he was born May 1864 in England, yet the birth was registered in July, August or September 1864. He may have been born in late May and the birth registered in early July or registered late.

Yes Coombs and it also says  a possibility for William Tobin.

Since he last appears on an 1881 UK Census - we have a possible 20 year gap !!

We all know ages and immigration years can vary.

On a more positive note - have you found any records for him in the USA ?

John - That passenger list you mentioned for James Tobin - is that the City of Chicago - 25 th April 1884 ?

Dettori I dislike your tone with me. I am doing my best to help this member and any info is good whether or not it is both sides of the Atlantic.

Hi dettori,
Yes that's the one. James was a Mill Hand in the 1881 census and so seems to fit.

Hello John,

The flowers are for Coombs -  no tone intended, curious if you had a further lead regarding William Tobin in 1900.

Tried searching for John Henry and James today but most of that name were born Ireland (makes you wonder if they could consider themselves irish with both parents born in Ireland - but that will remain a mystery)  The John W on the 1900 with William does not appear to show again unless the place of birth was New York.  Also had what I thought was Eliza and a married Catherine in 1910 New Jersey until it said Eliza had had 8 children and 5 survive !! So many apologises but I have got no further.

I have not yet been able to find any more info on William once he came to the US at the minute. Unfortunately outgoing passenger lists from the UK weren't kept until 1890 but there are several ports which have surviving records of where he may have disembarked.

Hi dettori,
I am thinking on the same lines as you about possible ''changes'' to origin. I have not said this in a previous post but William was married in England around 1877 and had two children. We know from a family story that he left for America probably around 1890 with a view to sending for his family once settled but nothing was heard of him ever again.
There are numerous possibilities as to what might have happened to him from setting up a new life to death in transit but I don't suppose we'll ever really know.
I have found a US Naturalisation record for a William Tobin in 1898 that seems to fit but I can't really be 100% certain. I think this is going to remain one of those family mysteries.
John.

Hi coombs,
Yes, it is proving difficult to say with any certainty what happened to William (see my previous post to dettori). I think he'll have to remain an international man of mystery!
John.
