Baptism of Ann Costar

Please can anyone help?
My 4 x great grandmother appears on the 1841 census at Wimbledon, Surrey age 58 "no" to being born in this county.
She appears on the 1851 census visiting her daughter at the same address in Wimbledon, Surrey age 72 born Dorchester, Oxfordshire.

The family search site shows 2 Christenings 11 JUL 1779 Appleton With Eaton, Berkshire and 30 MAY 1783 Shrivenham, Berkshire.
Both seem close to Dorchester but as the ages on the 2 census entries correspond to the 2 dates given, which is most likely to be the one I want?

Has anyone any ideas which would have been most likely to be regarded as Dorchester in 1851 or is there a chance of a look up for another Bapt. in Dorchester please.

Hi,
I would think this is the one.

In the Appleton transcriptions (from the OFHS);

Anne Coster is recorded as being baptised 11 Jul 1779 the dau of John & Mary.

There are six other children bapt. to them and I can list easily if required.


Also; John COSTER, bach,  married Mary SAYER, sp,  19-12-1775  Appleton.


In the Dorchester PRs there is this marriage entry;

20-6-1779 John COSTARD to Mary BOND by Lic.    (followed by presumably the witnesses);
 Vinct. Gosford, Sarah Thompson, Mary Borton.

Interestingly I could not find any children born to them in Dorchester

Can I ask if you think the Appleton entries are more likely to be regarded as Dorchester than those from shrivingham? Your opinion would be greatly valued!

This is the only relevant one listed.

As for my thoughts; Based on what you have already listed I would consider the Appleton entries worth serious consideration.  Dorchester is much closer
to Appleton or vice versa whereas Shrivenham is some distance away towards
Wiltshire.

Also the age of Ann in the 1851 census when visiting her daughter states
72 years which ties in nicely with her baptism in Appleton in 1779 (1779 + 72 =1851)

I've looked at the Coster entries on the IGI and see there are no less than
eleven children born to John & Ann Coster (nee Frampton) but I do not
think they are your family.

The Ann Coster baptised at Shrivenham in 1783 was aged only 12 weeks at baptism - which also suggests that she isn't the one who married Mr Littlejohn - if her age in 1851 is correct.

Added

Ann Coster born at Shrivenham c1783 and her sister Jane are in Gloucester in 1851.

Census ref: Class: HO107/ Piece: 1961/Folio: 448/Page: 7

Both are unmarried.

Hi Nick,

No trouble at all.

Unfortunately,  the abbreviations listed in the Appleton transcriptions do not say what "adm"  means,

but there are several entries with just "adm" and some which say "admitted on ...(date)" and others which state

"brought to church on..."

My understanding of this is;  admitted to the church "presumably" after a private baptism which may have

taken place at the parents home due to the child being sickly or not likely to survive.  Others more knowledgeable

than me may be able to offer additional information.
