George Young leading seaman
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 10:42 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help.
I have George Young born Ryde Isle Of Wight 1850,
1851 census home with mother age 3?,father is at sea,  father died 1857, George home with mother age 10 in 1861, all other census give his birth year as 1851.

In 1871 census  Castle Lewis RG10 1067 pg 31
Lewes Navel Prison East Sussex. George Young 20 u/m leading seaman Ryde Isle Of Wight,

I cant find him in Registers of Seamen's Services [there was only one George for 1851 year + or - 2] how can I find out what he was doing there. I have searched Newspapers & National Archives nothing found.

I found “ All Boys who enter the Navy must understand that they are bound to serve continuously for ten years from the time of their attaining the age of 18”  so he would have to serve until 1879?.
He Married 1875 Ryde IOW, His son Ernest George was born 30 Sep 1875 Ryde IOW, he was baptized 6 Feb 1876 St Johns Horselydown Southwark Surrey, father  George was a Labourer at Docks,

Thank you .

  - there's a George Young b.  Newchurch, Ryde 11 Dec 1850, volunteered 11 Dec 1868.

The record will show why/how he left. It's possible he ran or was discharged because of whatever landed him in Lewes Naval prison (unlikely to be anything that bad, really).
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Now have the navy records of George Young,
they gave info on him joining he navy boy 2nd class on Boscawen & signing  on for 10 years continuous Service on 11 December 1868 also a copy of his birth certificate, there are some blank pages that should show on what ships he was on!  no info as why he was in prison! Maybe he went home to the IOW & the ferry wasn’t running & he was late back on board ship!
