Thomas Hartley - born Todmorden, Yorks

Hi

In the 1901 census,  Thomas Hartley, aged 38, was married to Martha(maiden name unknown) aged 36, and lived at Churchyard Bottom,Heponstall, Yorks WR.  

Thomas was born in 1863/64 in Todmorden, Yorks. but
I cannot find any information on him other than the 1901
Census.

Who were his parents, did he have any siblings?

First thing I would do is ask for an 1891 census lookup. It's going to be a fairly common surname for the area.

Put down name, age, occupation,
wife's name & age,
any Kids' name & age on the request.
AS GIVEN IN 1901.

We may be able to work backwards on your man.

Hi Pauline

Yes, this looke like the Thomas Hartley(my GG Grandfather)I am seeking.  His mother, Mary, is shown as 'Head' but it is not clear if she is a widow or not(she
may have been divorced) and until I find her maiden name I cannot trace her date of marriage or her ancestors.
Returning to Thomas, how can I find the name of his
father, say in an earlier Census, and then, hopefully,
start on his ancestors.
I am most grateful for the detail you have given me.

First stage is to ask for an 1871 Heptonstall lookup, giving the 1881 details. It may show up a father, or other siblings for Thomas.

Note Mary Hartley *is* shown as a widow ("W" in the listing). She is likely to have been widowed not long after the birth of the youngest child.
From then go back to 1861. (With a common surname, you are going to need all the corroboration you can get). The man married to Mary Hartley is more likely to be on that one.

The 1851 is name-indexed, but I would think Mary is unlikely to be married at that time.

   You can do 1891 lookups all you want. I'm just using my knowledge of the local geography to Gerry's advantage.

Lovely little village is Heptonstall, but you can't swing a kitten in that graveyard without clobbering half-a-dozen Hartley, Marsland, and Pickles headstones.

Many thanks for the 1891 information and yes, this is the family I am researching.    Thomas's birth certificate is now worth following up.
I put a new topic on the Census look up requests and received a reply from 'Linda From Oz' who was able to do an 1871 look up for me.
