What's Hantshaving??
« on: Monday 28 March 05 10:21 BST (UK) »
I know there are some knowledgeable people out there...  ;)

I also know that Hants is the accepted abbreviation for Hampshire but until I came to look at censuses, I didn't realise it stood for Hantshaving!

Can anyone explain the origin and is there any difference or are the two terms interchangable?  :-\

TIA Arranroots

Hi Arranroots,

I found somebody else asking this question: Why Hampshire is called Hants

at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/HAMPSHIRE/2002-07/1025727243

Some of the answers:
I am not sure of the answer but in the Domesday map of 1086 Hampshire is spelt  Hantescire which may be relevant.
and
May I refer one and all to Chambers Dictionary?
This declares that the abbreviation Hants is drawn from the original name of the County being Hantshaving.

and
cuz ppl are lazy ????

hope this helps !  ;D

Bob you are a man of many parts!!   ;D ;D

Thank you.

Not sure that I am entirely enlightened though...

I like the Domesday bit 'cos it sounds authoritative, but isn't Hampshire nearer to Hampshire than Hantshaving?

Still puzzled  ???

The funny thing is, I have only seen it used in the 1891 census index on Ancestry.  That's the first time I have seen information that isn't on the original being included in an index.  And since the county has also gone through the phase of being called "Southampton" , how did Northamptonshire escape the "shaving" part - or did I miss it?  ???

Yes, that's where I saw it , Nell (or can I call you Little?)!!

Good point about Northants.  I think they should be "shaved" too!

The abbrevaition Hants must have come from somewhere, but Hantshaving ??

I had wondered if the census folk at Ancestry got it from the same place as Somalia (for Somerset!!)

 ??? ???

Coincidence !

just noticed this today on a RootsChat-Posting for the 1891 census

Jaimson, Annie 46 Rudington, Oxfordshire / Oxon Wife
Jaimson, Annie 20 Blackwatertown, Hampshire / Hantshaving Daughter    TAILORS? MACHINIST

Oxon is a well-known abbreviation for Oxfordshire

BUT
Hantshaving as an abbreviation for Hampshire ???

Yes, I am aware of Oxon. as an abbreviation of Oxoniensis, being the latin.

Googled Hantshaving and found someone proposing that Hantshaving is the Viking for Hampshire.  My Viking is even rustier than my latin...
