Bellerby, North Yorkshire
« on: Thursday 03 June 10 15:35 BST (UK) »
My great-grandfather John Pickersgill was born in Bellerby in 1811.  How can I find his birth record?  I would particularly like to know the names of his parents.   Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Are you certain of his year of birth? The IGI has  John Pickersgill baptised in Spennithorne in 1809, son of Thomas Pickersgill and Jane? (Most of my Bellerby ancestors were baptised in Spennithorne ).

The Records Office in Northallerton is excellent for searching parish registers, if you can manage to get there. If not, there might be a friendly Rootschatter who is going sometime soon.

Jen :)

Thanks for your reply.  I am using 1811 as year of birth based on the 1851 Census when John's age is given as 40, and born Bellerby (and again in 1861 Census).  There seems to be a lot of John Pickersgills born about that time but I know he was married to Eliza.  Thanks for the other information, perhaps someone may be able to look up something.  If not, I will have to plan a trip over there one of these days.  Anyone know the office address where the records would be available?   Jazgran    (By the way he was my great-great grandfather!)

My first reply to your question was possible the dimmest I have ever given - I changed it once I realised what I had done but am feeling very silly right now!  ::)

I have had a look at 1851 and agree with your estimate of when he was born but still worth considering the earlier one, I think.

Thanks again genjen - don't feel silly - we all have our senior moments, me more than most!!
My hubby has just informed me that Northallerton is 170 miles away, which would entail a rather expensive round trip.   So if any Rootschatters are in the area and willing to have a look for me I would be very grateful.  As there are so many John Pickersgills, it would be lovely to have the names of his parents.   Yours in anticipation.   Jazgran.

Hi Jazgran, :)

As Jen has already said, a lot of her Bellerby ancestor's were baptised in Spennithorne. Just thought it worth mentioning, Bellerby is in the parish of Spennithorne, as you can see here :

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Spennithorne/index.html

I've just had a look at the census returns, I could be very mistaken, but I think the baptism Jen found is quite likely the correct one. All the other people born about this time and by this name, aren't in the right area.

Nothing lost if you already knew, but it will bump this back to the top if anyone is able to visit the Archives.

Kind regards,

Pels.

Have you checked the entry for his marriage?    That might give more details.  When was it?  There is probably an LDS family history centre near where you live and you can order the films to search there.

Hi again,

In 1851, John and Eliza have an 18 year old son living with them - Miles Pickersgill, born Leeds. Also present, are who I imagine to be two step children, Joseph and William Cheatter. I say this, because in 1861 Joseph is still living with them and listed as such.

Marriage, Jun qtr 1850
Eliza Cheater
John Pickersgill
Leeds, Vol 23, page 408

Living in Bellerby, on the 1841 census, the couple we assumed to be the parents of John (Thomas and Jane Pickersgill) have an 8 year old child with them called Miles. The enumerator has indicated with a small single slash on the return that Miles is living separately to the family, he's therefore been indexed as staying on his own.

As a matter of interest have you found John and his first wife in 1841 ?
