Corney, East Cowes, Isle of Wight
« on: Friday 04 June 10 12:02 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for any Info that maybe out there about my G.Grandfather George Corney.
My info comes from his death and marriage certificates.
Firstly his full name is George Osborne Robert Lawrence Corney, he also went by the name Robert Lawrence Corney.
He passed away in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1953 at the age of 82
Which would make his d.o.b. about 1871 East Cowes, IOW. On his marriage Cert it has Queens Estate, East Cowes, IOW
Father: George Osborne Corney an Architect. Mother: Margaret Hazlett born Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland ~1841

I am aware of Margaret and Robert moving to Australia but I'm not sure about George Snr
the earliest date I have of them in Australia is 1903, Margaret in Charters Towers, QLD and Robert in Cloncurry, QLD.
This is where he married Mattie Kirby in 1909, by 1919 they had moved to Chillagoe / Tumoulin area in North Queensland where they had 3 children Mattie Margaret Catherine (Smith) (1910), Gladys (1914 died as an infant) and George Lawrence(1916)

Thanks in advance for any info that may help fill the gaps.
Corney (England, Isle of Wight)
Hazlett (Ireland, Fermanagh)
Sneddon (Scotland, Lanak)

Not having any success with this one.

The Isle of Wight FHS has a very good searchable database for BDM, including the mother's maiden name:

http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bmd/startbmd.htm

There are lots of Corney births registered but nothing in the time frame you specify with either Hazlett or Little (her previous married name) on the records.

If he was born in 1870 +/- a couple of years, then I would expect to be able to find at least his father on the 1871 census, but I can't.  I've also looked in 1881 without success.  This includes variants, born on IOW, not born on IOW - not very successful at all.

I wonder what may be found about Mr Corney senior - was he responsible for any of the work at Osborne House?  I've tried the Times Archive and London Gazette - drawn a blank.
 :(

It's funny how things can be right under your nose but until you get that one piece of info the connections aren't made.

The update.

Found a court record for Margaret Corney in Townsville for insolvency in 1896, had her listed as a widow. Then found a court record relating to Margaret Corney in Townsville about her late husband George Corney Foreman of Works Townsville who died 1893 his profession, Colonial Architect
So I looked up Queensland BDM and it has his parents names listed as Charles Corney and Charlotte Smith.
I knew I had seen those names before and there they were 1861 census IOW living in Burnels Alley, East Cowes with George age 12

So the death cert has been ordered to confirm results and the hunt beings for info about Charles and  Charlotte

You have a mystery here - the maiden name of Charlotte for the children born 1854 onwards is Webb.

Charlotte, the first child shown in 1861 census was born in 1846/7.  I can't find a Corney - Smith marriage.  Nor could I find a Corney - Webb marriage.  I DID find a marriage of a Charlotte Webb in 1847 to a Charles Trim.  This is the year that Charlotte junior was born and according to the IOW index she was registered as Charlotte Webb, other surname Trim.

I couldn't find the Corney family in 1851, but I did find a Trim family, parents Charles and Charlotte, right ages etc, with a daughter Charlotte Trim and a son George Trim age 2.  Father Charles was a mason's labourer.  There was another daughter - Fanny aged 6.  She was born and registered as Frances Webb, other surname Trim.  I can't find George Trim's birth registration or one for George Corney.  But there is a baptism in 1849 for George Corney, parents Charles & Charlotte in Newchurch.

And then there are baptisms for children surnamed Trim - Charles in 1851, William in 1854 etc - all the names in the 1861 and 1871 census where the family is named Corney.

Confused doesn't cover it  :-\

As you say.....Hmmmm

Louisa Corney age 32 is on the 1881 census at Church Path with her mother Elizabeth Brett.

There is a marriage registration for George Corney and Louisa Ann Brett in 1871.  They married at St John's, Northwood.

Louisa was apparently born in East Cowes in 1849.  I think the IOW indexes show her as Louisa Breet.  Henry and Fanny are registered as Brett, but Henry and Fanny are their middle names!  Louisa's father was Jacob Brett, mother Elizabeth Jeffery, who married in 1847.

Still no idea what it all means though.
