Irish surname
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 10:33 BST (UK) »
Hi there!
I wonder if anyone can help me with my great great grandmothers maiden name which I managed to obtain via a birth certificate of one of her children although the writing is not crystal clear.  At first glance I thought it was Walsh but on closer inspection it looks like Halish. I have no idea whatsoever which part of Ireland she came from but would dearly love to know so that I can research that part of my family.
Mary was born in 1817 and married John Tomney born about 1816 but I have no idea where or when. The only thing that I do know for certain is that they were both Irish.
If anyone can help I would be most grateful.
Jean.

If you can scan and post the section of the cert with the name someone may be able to help.

Walsh sounds more plausible but without the original its impossible to say.

Dara.

Thank you so much for that - will do. I am gazing and gazing at this name through a magnifying glass and trying to compare it with the Irish surnames but am still as befuddled as when I started.

Hi there! I have definitely identified my great great grandmothers maiden surname as Walsh. Now the hunt starts for whereabouts in Ireland she came from. Her name was Mary Walsh born 1817 and she married John Tomney born 1816 in Ireland. They had three children, Mary 1836, Elizabeth 1840 and John 1848 when my great grandfather Edward Stephen Tomney was born on Spike Island Cork in 1849. Presumably they married somewhere around 1835 but where? Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

With a common surname like Walsh you will need to establish a fairly detailed location within Ireland (e.g. Parish or townland) to start to research parish records.

Note - not all early records have survived and not that many Catholic parishes were keeping records in the very early 1800s.

see: Introduction to Irish Records

If they originated in County Cork, or were married there, it might be work keeping an eye on the website at : http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/  They dont have records for Cork yet, but are due to add records for the city and west part of the county later this year.

Hi Shane,
Thank you so much for that. I will certainly do as you suggest in the hope of getting a breakthrough. With the surname of Walsh being common in Ireland and having no idea whatsoever where to start looking it would seem that I will have my work cut out. The Tomney name however seems to be rare but is proving to be just as elusive.
Thank you again.
