Old fishfarm Chingford
« on: Sunday 06 June 10 14:16 BST (UK) »
This is a long shot.
Does anyone recognise any of the following from the 1891 census please

Church Row then The fishery next sch   Rectory then Cemetry North lodge then Cemetry South then Alpha Road
There was a pub called the Green Man in Church Row

I am particularly looking for the fishery which was the home of Henry McMullin at the time of the census

Fingers crossed someone will be able to locate it

Hi
According to the Streetmap website Alpha Road is still there but the map gives no further clues that I can see.
If you go to historicaldirectories.org
click on Kelly's Directory of Essex 1894
and search for McMullin you get on page 95
'McMullin Henry water bailiff to Mrs Heathcote, The Fishery'

If you search the census for 'Heathcote' in Chingford that may pinpoint the fishery.
I looked further at the same directory and read that Mrs Heathcote was a major land owner in Chingford and lived at Friday Hill in Chingford.
I wonder if the fishery was Connaught Waters - still a fishery apparently.

Many thanks Clincher  I've been looking a bit more too. I found in British History http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=42713
there were four fisheries in Chingford I think at the river before they constructed the reservoirs  It seems that the cemetery with the north and South lodges is Chingford Mound I saw it on the Google street site going left from Alpha Rd along Old Church Road  I think the Rectory must be near the church opposite the cemetery so possibly the Fishery was past the church towards the river. On the next census Henry's widow was keeping a toll house at the fishery and there is mention of a toll bridge in that Link so again it all points down to the river. Henry is mentioned as Water Bailiff in two versions of Kelly's directory one nearly 10 years after his death.
Its been an interesting chase many thanks for your help I will check the Connaught water fishery out too.

Going by the route the Enumerator took the most likely place for the Fishery would have been were the reservoir is now by the now junction of Waltham Way and Brindwood Road.

Try contacting the Chingford History Society at  www.chingfordhistory.org.uk  they should know.
