Missing from 1901 Census COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 06 June 10 19:42 BST (UK) »
I’m looking for help to find where my husband's  Great Grand Father was in 1901.

He was born in Ireland  (Kingstown, Co Dublin)  on the 27th March 1865 and I have his baptism cert.

On the 1911 Ireland Census he is residing  in Ireland (Kingstown,Dublin) with his wife (2nd wife) and two children from his first marriage.

However he and his first wife and two children do not show up on the 1901 Ireland Census.

I know he was a Sapper with the Royal Engineers during WW1.  Here are the only details I have:

John J Williams, John J
Royal Engineer 151033   Sapper
Royal Engineers WR/502332   Sapper

Inland Water Transport
*****************************************

Being in his late forties, was he not over the age limit for recruitment for  WW1?  Or were they exceptional times and upper age limit ignore.

Or was it the case that I may believe (pure speculation on my part) that he had previously served with the British Army and that fact gave him entitlement to sign up again for WW1?

Given that he and his family do not appear to be in Ireland in 1901, is there any way I can find if he served in the 1901 Boer War?

Also, where might I get any further info about his service in WW1 (i belive he was in France) ?

I think they were living in the parish of St. Cybi and St. Seiriol, Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales

There is a Williams family:
John James 26, Cathine 28, Alexander 5 and Ann Maria 1
listed as born in Kingstown, Ireland

It looks like John's age was incorrect but going on children's names and ages I'd say they are the same family - found an ancestry.co.uk searching using Alexander Williams

Further generations:

Myluck,

Thanks. That's them alright and John James Williams was aged 36 at the time (not 26).

It's a surprise to me that they were living in Wales then given they were born in Kingstown and returned at Kingstown on the 1911 Ireland Census.

Would there be anyway of finding out how long they lived in Wales ?

John James Williams joined the British Army in 1915 and has a service record for WW1.  He was aged 51 then but I guess he lied about his age on this occasion  to obtain work to pay for the up keep of his family in tough times.

I am really not sure sorry
I just tried Wales for you as I was stuck with my family and needed a different challenge!!
The crossing from Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) to Holyhead is quite short and as a seaman would be a logical location - not sure why he'd have the family with him though!
Best of luck
Finding him has given me the impetus to keep going at my lost souls
