census look up please
« on: Monday 07 June 10 14:18 BST (UK) »
I would be so very grateful for your help (again!). I have found the names of the parents of my g.g.grandfather,and they are Angus Mckechnie - master blacksmith - and Agnes Mckechnie M/S Mclean, parents of John Mckechnie, also a blacksmith(journeyman!)
I have been onto SP and found only two deaths for an Angus Mckechnie, guessing at his date of birth, but allowing quite a few years for error either way. However,I have now run out of credits and until I have more put on for me, this line of enquiry must stop - except that both the deaths are recorded as being in Glasgow, and his son lived in Milton and worked in Cardross.I have the census details for him and his own wife and children from 1851,and the parents were not living with them.

However,as the father died in Glasgow,I wonder if you could find any reference on the 1841  census to the parents living in the Glasgow area, and this would also lead me to find any brothers and sisters that John may have had too.I have searched myself on the ancestry site and family search, but cannot find them.I'd be most grateful if,with your experience, you could help me.Thank you.

This entry looks interesting, from 1861:

Angus Mceachern 70, blacksmith b. Kilchoman, Argyll
Ann Mceachern 68 b. Kilchoman, Argyll
Angus Mceachern 7, grandson b. Dumbarton
Peter Mceachern 5, grandson b. Dumbarton
Ann Mceachern 16, daughter b. Kilchoman, Argyll
Margaret Galbrath 13, granddaughter b. Glasgow

Address: Ballychatrigin, Oa, Argyll

Ann is a common variant of Agnes, see www.whatsinaname.net

Although you are searching as McKechnie (and the various spellings of this surname), I would take on board the comments from your other post regarding the surname links between McKechnie and McEachern (which also has a huge amount of variations!).

Possible for this family in 1851:

Angus Mceachern 65, smith b. Kilchoman, Argyle
Anne Mceachern 64 b. Kilchoman, Argyle
Anne Mceachern 9 granddaughter b. Kilchoman, Argyle

Address: Ballychahyne, Kildalton, Argyll

Not sure on ages given the differences between 1851 and 1861.

Another maybe for 1841 if I am following this family correctly:

Angus McEarchern, 50, black smith
Ann, 50
John 20
Malcolm 17

Address: Lower Lossit, Portahaven, Argyll

There is also a death in Ao, Argyll in 1862 for an Ann MacLean/McEachern b. 1797 (as I said, ages jumping about which brings uncertainty!).

Thank you so very much for taking the time to look this up for me. It is most interesting, and could well be the exact family,as my g.g.grandfather was Angus, born in Dumbarton in 1857.Lots to follow up! I am very, very grateful.
