It depends on the time period and whether or not they were officers.

You could start here, where some navy records are indexed (generally about £3.50 to purchase if you find the record).

I got my dad's Navy records - I downloaded them online from the National Archives.

Now that brings back a memory - I think I had problems locating my father's records, until someone on RC pointed out that you search for the date of enlistment, not the DOB.
