wemyss links with roxburghshire

I have  farming ancestors who moved between Wemyss in Fife and places like Town o'Rule, Netherwells, in Roxs and North Northumberland. Was there a common landowner such as the Earl of Wemyss who owned these farms? I cannot work out any other connection as to why they should have moved such a long way. This took place in early 19c. help appreciated!
