It might be a good idea to check any online newspapers to see if an obituary was held for him. That might just list his place of origin or his parents.

I have tried to find items in the newspaper of the nearest larger city as the town where he lived didn't have a  newspaper yet. The newspaper from the larger city had several articles abot his death in the Civil War with a military slant. How brave he was, his men appreciated him, praise from the leaders etc. But no obit. as such. I may borrow more papers on inter-library-loan and look for something on a funeral because if there is such an article it might name relatives that attended.

Even if it named just a sibling or a county of birth within England that would be a start.
