Hi Debby'
Thank you for the Samuel Barnes info, its been a great help. Now I wonder if can shed any light on his father William, as I have his father John Barnes b 30 4 1724 I also have a Thomas, and John , and Samuel all from Northiam area b in the 1720's and wonder if they are all brothers of John barnes.
My family is also conected to the Barnes in another direction, through John Barnes b 1608 married to Ann Morris of Westfield and Brede. They are all probably linked from him some how, but I have yet to fathom that out.
kind regards Mary

I have Hooks, Unicombs, Gutsells and Selmes in my family too but not as direct ancestors.

The Hooks in my family married Santers and Furmingers.

The Gutsells married the Selmes and the Selmes also married the Barnes (as you already know).

Its funny, that being a Hook myself, its the one name I can't seem to trace. I have only got back to Richard Hook,'s marriage to Sarah Sinden, who his parents were I havn't been able to make out yet, a nudge in the right direction would be a great help.  I see by your list of family ties, you also have Munn, my grandmother was Mary Ann Munn,b 1888 I have quite a lot on the Munn's if I can be of any help. She was married in Battle.
Mary.

Just thought I'd say hi. I am descended from Philadelphia's cousin Simon Selmes ( Son of Simon & Sarah {Sal} nee Aylward) Simon married Ann Matson (from Kent) and a few of their children ended up in Australia also. Their son Nelson was transported in 1833, and I believe another son Alfred emigrated about 1851-1861.

Another interesting connection is their daughter Caroline Selmes (b.1820 at Rye, Sussex) who married William Barnes at Berkley in 1841. I have not researched her husband, as Caroline is not my direct ancestor - but I wouldn't be surprised if he is related to Philadelphia's first husband!

Hello,I have done a bit of digging, and yes you are right, there is a connection. This is what I found.
John Barnes b 1698 married Mary b 1702 she d 15.06 1742,  Northium Sx.
There son John Barnes  b 30.04 1724 married Lydia Cover b 1724, & d 20.05.1789
They married 14.06.1747, in Failight Sx
There son William Barnes b 01.03.1748 in Northium  married Mary Baker b 1755,
        They married 11. 01.1773.
They had several children, one of themwas Philadephia's first husband
Samuel Barnes b 29.10.1784, who as you know died on the "Roxy Castle" in 1839
and James Barnes b 28.10.1789 and married Mary Brett b 1792.
It was james and Mary's son William b 1820 that married Caroline Selmes in 1841,
Then on the 18th Sept 1841 the two of them sailed on the "CANTON" to N.S.W

Regards Mary.
