Indeed.....I still tend to think he went over there.....maybe he's the Richard Harper you found & the age on the shipping list is incorrect.....maybe he went over earlier.....George Asher ended up in Apalachicola (!), Florida working in the sponge trade (as in the sea, not in cakes...at this time Apalachicola was the world's leading supplier of sponges.....his father/stepfather in England was a dealer in sponges when he died & the man behind the trade in Florida was a German Jewish immigrant....as were George's family in England) I don't know if George went out with the specific intention of going there or not....if he did, then maybe Richard Harper went out earlier/later with that place in mind.

Thanks for asking, dettori......George Asher's age is correct on the Ontario's shipping list, but is exactly 10 years out on the 1880 Apalachicola census....maybe Richard Harper is on an Apalachicola census ? Haven't been able to find a son of Richard Harper who could be the one you found....doesn't mean there wasn't one, of course

Thanks for your continued interest, dettori.

Don't know....he married Mary Simpson at Basford, Nottingham on 16/12/1819, but we can't find the birth of a Richard Harper in Nottingham (when I say "we", I mean the Nottingham expert Dizzifish...thanks, Dizz) She's found 4 Richard Harpers in Nottingham born too late to be him....but none of them have got a father named Richard
