Richard Harper on New York passenger list c 1840 ?
« on: Thursday 10 June 10 10:55 BST (UK) »
Richard Harper's son in law (George Asher) arrived in New York from Britain on 7/7/1840. Someone told me that the ship concerned was the Ontario, but I've since been informed that there was no such ship....it was probably one of the ships operated by the Ontario shipping line.

Richard Harper disappears from English records at about the same time, so I was wondering if he went too (the 2 wives were left at home....George's wife remarried in 1846 & her mother,Richard Harper's wife, lived with her & her second husband)

So I'd be grateful if someone could have a look to see if he's on a shipping list. (for background information, see my thread on the Kent lookup board...but this is all I want to know)

Thank you

I read through the Kent thread looking for a date of birth for your Richard Harper but could'nt see one, so I'll post this anyway, this one is 25 years old and the only 1840 entry I saw.

Thanks very much dettori.

My Richard Harper married in 1819, so it's either a different person or the age is wrong on the passenger list....trying to check on him & to see if he had a son named Richard who would fit

Just out of curiousity on www.castlegarden.org you can just enter the name of a ship and the Ontario did come up.
The earliest Richard Harper on there was 1850. Problem is the lack of passenger records available at that time.  :(

Thanks dettori.....when I was asking about George Asher & mentioned the Ontario, quite a few people said they could see the entry, so maybe the person who couldn't find it was mistaken

Yes, I can see the George Asher entry but it has no image so I cannot check if Richard Harper was also a passenger on it. He does'nt come up in his own name for that passenger list, I've tried variations of R. Harper Rcd Harper etc thinking he is hidden but still nothing. I will paste the details below for you. Can you go back to the person who saw him and get a copy of the list off them ?

Name: George Asher. Age: 23
Arrival Date: 7 Jul 1840
Port of Arrival: New York
Port of Departure: London
Place of Origin: Great Britain
Ship: Ontario

I can see the original image for the Ontario, with George Asher on it. I can't see anyone named Harper on the list.
