Charter School Lane, Armagh
« on: Saturday 12 June 10 00:40 BST (UK) »
I believe I've found some of my ancestors on the 1901 census living at Charter School Lane in Armagh city. Can anybody tell me where this street was? And what was the 'charter school' ?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Hello Kevin,
The school on Charter School Lane was known locally as Drelincourt School. The Dean of Armagh (Peter Drelincourt) died around 1722. His widow Mary founded the school in 1732. The original school was built in what is now known as Navan Street area of the town. An estate of private houses replaced the original school and kept the Drelincourt name.
In 1977 a new school was built at Ballinahone Ave at the opposite side of the town. Drelincourt is a Church of Ireland maintained primary school. You would be able to get further information and photographs from the archives of Armagh Public Library at Abbey St Armagh City.
Good luck with your search.
Norh

Thanks very much indeed Norh. I've found Drelincourt Close (I assume that's the private houses you mention) on Google Earth street view. It looks a lot nicer than I imagine the old Charter School Lane was... looking at the census it was the poorest of the poor living there. I will probably get in touch with the library at some stage and see what photos they have.
Thanks again, and also for the PM alerting me to your reply,
Kevin

Hi Kevin

Was just wondering which family connection you had from Charter School Lane? My relatives were the Mcardle - Patrick who was a Poutlry Expoter.

Hi,
My great-grandfather is James Gartland on the 1901 census. I don't think the family lived in Charter School Lane for very long as they were all born in Cavan and Monaghan, and in 1911 they are in Tandragee (without the father, Peter, who I assume to have died).
My great-grandfather moved back to Armagh city some time after that census. He settled in the Banbrook Hill area.

Civil registration index lists a death for Peter Gartland, age 60, Oct./Dec.1909 Armagh registration district volume 1 page 22.
If Peter's wife is in 1911 census it should give her marital status- single, married, widowed or divorced.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
