James Barnes, Padbury, Bucks
« on: Monday 14 June 10 10:19 BST (UK) »
I have only just discovered a family link to Buckinghamshire and seem to have got stuck already.
I'm looking for James Barnes c1826 (cordwainer). I've found him on all the censuses but I'm looking for a couple of marriages for him. His first wife was called Elizabeth and they had a daughter born in Padbury in 1846 called Sarah Elizabeth Barnes. He then re-marries to Ann (b. c 1826  Steeple Claydon, Bucks)  and their child John Barnes is born in Padbury in 1848. I would really love to find out the maiden names of these two ladies and the dated of marriage. I've tried the BMD registers but they are inconclusive.

Anna, welcome to rootschat :)

Buying the marriage certs [9GBP each]would give you the maiden name of each bride and her father's name and occupation.   Bit of a pain having to shell out that money but sometimes it can be the only way to go.

Thanks Charlotte, it is a bit of a pain getting the certs, especially as the price has gone up, but I have no idea where the marriages took place and Free BMD isn't much help. I've just managed to pin down some of their kids d.o.b so I'll be able to trace Ann's maiden name this way.

Hi Suz,

James Barnes is a little hazy about his d.o.b - it's either c1807 or c 1826 (big difference, I know) - he was born in Hethe, Oxfordshire.
Ann's is c1826 and she's from Steeple Claydon, Bucks.

I found baptism records for his two  children in the Padbury PRs on the IGI, both born to different mothers. Elizabeth obviously died and he married Ann c1846.

it seems the birth reg's for some of the children are "Barns" instead of "Barnes"
there is a marriage FreeBMD
james Barns
Mar qtr 1846
Buckingham (padbury falls within this district)
on same page there are 2 Elizabeths -and 1 Ann!!!

Birth reg FreeBMD
Sarah Elizabeth barns
Jun qtr 1846
Buckingham
6 567
there is a death reg
Elizabeth Barnes
Jun qtr 1846
Headington
16 43
(no way of telling if it is correct Elizabeth without risking certificate)

Marriage reg freeBMD
Dec qtr 1847
Wycombe
James Barnes
Ann Stacey
Wycombe
6 791

Birth reg
John Barns
mar qtr 1848
Buckingham
6 353

death reg
John Barns
Jun qtr 1848
Buckingham
6 275

so it looks like 1st John dies in infancy
