James Howard, Post mast
« on: Tuesday 15 June 10 01:49 BST (UK) »
Looking for James Howard born Hanningfield, Essex, England in 1828.  He apparently emigrated to New Zealand pre 1841 and became post master of......something like Mount Penrose at Onehunga, or vice versa.  Of course, no such place....  The surname might be spelled Harwood or Harrod also.  Thx, josh

Hi josh

Ah ... think I have found him buried at the Onehunga Cemetery in Auckland.

James William HOWARD - died 19/10/1902 - aged 74 years
formerly of Essex ... (so this chap born 1828).

Husband of May HOWARD  ... does that sound right ?

Will post the link for you in a moment.

Added:  Oops - read SPC's link after posting this ... so seems someone else is on the trail of James HOWARD too ?

Oh my gosh.....this is him!!!!!  (Also, I'm sylvia - but I must have unsubscribed when the rest of the messages re this man went on the NZ list some time ago - I check up on him every now and then to see if anyone is looking for his English family).  I have just emailed the one gal back - oh, this is so exciting.  I didn't expect to get very far, he always seems to have just disappeared and I know the family stories can be a little off sometimes.  I was recently thinking maybe my great grandmother got it wrong and he went to Australia instead...  Thanks everyone, this is so great.  josh aka sylvia

Hi  Sylvia,

Do you know how many children he had? unfortunately the earlier births on NZ BDM's do not have the parents names,

Cheers Janette

Unfortunately all I know is what my great grandmother wrote in 1945 - that he went to New Zealand and became post master of a place called mount penrose in oneryhunga - my great uncle decided she meant onehunga as it was the only place with a similar name!  That's all we knew about him - but it's nice to have everybody finally accounted for in that family!  He disappeared prior to the 1841 census in England, no marriage record for him.  Sylvia
