Customer Service Centre, Lincolnshire County Council

::)  Ah!  Probably not someone in the registrar's department, then.  I expect if you'd got hold of someone there you'd have had a more helpful response.

I'd be inclined to order the cert Geoff suggested direct from the local office anyway, with a covering letter giving the year and quarter, the last known occupation, and explaining the uncertainty re the surname.  At least then if the bloke turns out to be a surgeon or a stonemason or something else wildly out, they won't charge you for a wrong cert.
UK census content is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk  Transcriptions are my own.

As usual Geoff I think you've come up trumps.

In a case like that, when you think that something ought to be there, just search FreeBMD on first name and see what comes up.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

The e-mail came from the Registration Services e-mail address and gave me an address to write to if I didn't want to order on line, so not sure why it was signed by someone in Customer Service Centre.  It might be a better idea to ring them up and discuss things with them.

Geoff - I should have searched just with John, my brain wasn't in gear. ::)
