PRs of St Michael at Thorn - Do they exist
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 11:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Does anyone know whether the original parish registers of St Michael at Thorn still exist?

The set offered by the Norfolk Record Office only contains 7 fiche (typical Norwich parish is 20+). Latter Day Saints have films of the Archdeacon's transcripts, plus some 19th century banns. Were they destroyed when the church was bombed?

Young - Sussex (Brighton)
Rose - Army, London
Beckwith - London, Norfolk

Hi Sue,

According to the Norfolk R.O. site the original registers were destroyed during WWII.

The best thing to do is to stick to looking at the Archdeacons Transcripts.

BTs and ATs are good where the originals dont survive. It does say in a genealogy book of mine that if the originals dont survive dont despair as you can consult BTs and ATs.

Yes, I've done that for Brighton, Sussex. Burials 1680-1700 are missing or damaged in the original registers, but the BTs are fine. The only problem is that the entries are sometimes abbreviated (much less detail).

Try here, they are only Banns from 1833 to 1909, well worth a look if you need other parish's though....
