Kilmacanoge - Glen of the Downs area
« on: Sunday 20 June 10 00:57 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am trying to find out surnames of people who lived in the Kilmacanoge - Glen of the Downs area, I remember camping in the glen as A young boy in the 1960's
My brother said that we knew people who lived there and I am trying to find who they may have been.
I have tried for the voter's register, but they don't seem to have one

It was around where the garden centre is , just before you went down hill to the Glen.

From what I can remember , it was on the left coming out from Bray. Up on the Hill/ mountain

If anyone can help I would be delighted

Thank you in anticipation

The area you are referring to is probably Ballydonagh. Coming out from Bray you come to Sexton's garden centre. It is still in business there.  On the left hand side of the road is a steep narrow lane with a few cottages called Ballydonagh Lane. There is also Ballydonagh Road which heads east around the rear of Bellview Demesne past the Glen of the Downs Golf Club. On the right hand side of the N11 is Red Lane where the Glenview Hotel is located and it leads to the Sugar Loaf mountain. Straight across the N11 main road from Sexton's garden centre was a very well known filling station and motor repair garage called The Glen Garage. It was run by the Byrne family and closed circa 2000.
I hope this is of help. Did your family have friends there or were you just camping on farmland?

I have tried for the voter's register, but they don't seem to have one

can I ask where you tried?
I know many Electoral Registers were available in the National Archive in Dublin, but they had to be ordered in advance. So I wondered whether Wicklow County Council might have copies from 1920 onwards.

Hi
I tried Wicklow county council, but they say they have no records of voters in that area, They didn't know why, but they are the people who should have them.

I also tried the church in Kilmac, I dont know any other grave yards around there. Do you know of any that I could search?

Thank you so much for your help

Hi,

If you google Wicklow Headstone Index it will give you a list of the cemeteries you may want to check out. The Index provides you with both
text and photos of the headstones in each cemetery.

However, the Index for Kilquade only contains lists for the church and church grounds. It does not include Priestnewtown or Kilmurray Cemeteries which would be the main burial grounds for the RC parish of Kilquade.

If you are not familiar with the area, lists you may want to view are;
Calary, Kilmacanogue, Delgany, Redford, Kilquade, Newcastle
