    I'm trying to find out who john hodson married in Northampton (1837-1923) sep quarter 1845
    vol 15 page 444. john was a widower when he remarried in 1850.

You need to know which church the marriage took place in to look it up in parish records.  The reference number is only valid when ordering a copy of the cert from the GRO

Was he still alive in 1851  If so - you can look him up on the 1851 census to see which of the 4 females listed on the same page are shown as his wife

             john married in 1845 but his wife died later on because john was a widower when he remarried in 1850. there is a death record for caroline hodson in 1850.

That would seem to answer the question as there is a Caroline on the same page of the marriage entry
