Joseph MASSEN born Walsoken
« on: Tuesday 22 June 10 05:30 BST (UK) »
Hello, I hope that this is the correct place to ask for help.  I am having difficulties finding the parents of Joseph Massen born About 1811 Walsoken, Norfolk.  This is the information that I have:
1841 Census  ?Staff Street, Walsoken, Norfolk
Joseph MASON age 30 occupation boot closer [Note name is misspelt]
1851 Census Cooks Hill Walsoken
Joseph MASSEN age 42 Occupation Boot Closer born Bourne, Lincolnshire
1861 Census Cooks Hill Walsoken
Joseph MASSEN age 53 Occupation Boot Closer born Kings Lynn, Norfolk
1871 Census Whitby Street, Wisbech, St. Peter
Joseph MASSEN age 64 Occupation Shoe Maker born Lynn Norfolk
The only baptism that I have found for Joseph Massen is 26 Mar 1805 St. Nicholas, Kings Lynn, Father Richard Massen, Mother Melchia. Then this marriage Richard Massen married Milcah Taylor 22 Aug 1821 St. Martin, Birmingham, Warwick.  Apart from the dates of Marriage and Baptism being way off, I still do not think that this is my Joseph Massen.  Can anyone help
me .  Thank you.

If you can get his marriage certificate (assuming he married) then it should have his fathers name and occupation. Something which you could use to help locate his baptism.

Thank you Katharine, Joseph was married 22 March 1830 which was before registration started, so I dont know if or where I would be able to get a copy of the Marriage Certificate.

You could try the library local to the area he married. A lot of libraries seem to have local parish registers on film in their local studies department. Even better if you know what denomination you are looking for.
I have had great success doing this - they often send you an email copy at no charge, especially if you can give them a date for the entry you are after.
Hopefully the marriage register will have the father's name and occupation. Something useful to you.

Hello again Katharine,

Thanks for the advice, I hadn't thought of that.  I couldn't find an e-mail address for the Wisbech Library but I did find a snail mail address for them.
I do have the Register Number and the File Number for the marriage which is recorded as Wisbech St. Peter.  I live in Australia, so these things are always difficult.

I am in Oz too. As I say, that is how I get some of my information - I always check the local library online first in the area I am researching.
Good luck.
