West Bromwich 1841 Census-Parkes
« on: Saturday 26 June 10 20:45 BST (UK) »
Hi from down under,  :)  :)

Would any kind person be able to assist with helping me decipher the name of an area in West Bromwich in the place column of my ancestor in the 1841 Census.

The record is for Josh. Parkes b c 1816 and wife Betsey b c 1816 and children Thomas-4, Betsey-2, Mary-8months

HO107/977/ 6/34 p29

I would very very glad to hear from any one up for the challenge of deciphering this very unclear record,

Many thanks,

Pilgrims Progress  :)

Hi Donna, ;D

Many thanks- yes it does seem to be somewhere about 1/4 mile NW of the city centre of West Bromwich - somewhere around the vacinity of Chapel St.

Thank you for your help,

Pilgrims Progress  :)  :)

Hi,
Its transcribed as Hateley Heath on FindMyPast which seems to be an area in West Bromwich if you google.

Hi Cathy,

Super sleuthing! Thank you. Poor old Hadley Heat hasn't had a very good reputation in its later years.

Many thanks again,

Pilgrims progress  :)  ;)  :D

Hi Donna and Cathy,

Is it possible that it was "Holyhead" Rd, with a Queen St nearby? I dicovered it last night when tracing another part of the family- it appeared to be a very long road which may have been replaced by the long road that runs through the modren town of West Bromwich. There is no Holyhead Rd there now.

Thank you both so much for taking such an interest in my posting,

Pilgrims Progress

Hi Donna,

You are probably right - I think I was last tracing in Wednesbury instead of West Bromwich when I found a reference to Holyhead Rd.  :-[

I love to record every scrap of evidence I find lurking within a census record to bring to life the lives of our ancestors. Any detail of an address rather than just the name of the town is very special,

Cheers for now and many thanks for your interest,

Pilgrims Progress   :D  :D
