Ebbetts - Cornwall to New Zealand *COMPLETED*
« on: Sunday 27 June 10 05:26 BST (UK) »
Wondering if someone could help me find Ebbett family members from St Keverne, Cornwall who arrived in New Zealand ?, married and died here.  Am looking for year of travel if possible.  Surname is Ebbett - Frank Rogers b. 1851, John Harris b. 1854, Charles b. 1856 and a later generation of George Matthews b. 1884 and Henry Alfred Vincent b. 1894.  The two younger chaps are nephews of Frank Rogers, John Harris and Charles. John Harris married NZ 1882, Charles and his wife Alice had their first child here 1888, George Matthews Ebbett married in NZ 1909 and Alfred 1921.  Any help with passenger list info would be very much appreciated. With thanks....Annie

There is an ITM for John Harris that states length of residence 2 months
Now it can just mean in area but could mean he came to NZ about March 1882
Married Woodville, so you would suspect first ship into Wellington

Look at this book entry
In September 1874 a 21-year-old farm labourer, John Ebbett, sailed for New Zealand on the Clarence and the certificate of his marriage in New Zealand in 1882 shows him to have been born at St. Keverne, the son of a coastguard.

Althea.....Can't thank you enough for your help.  Yep, those two are mine and I have now added that information to my family tree.  Just the remainder to look for now.

Thanks for being such a gem!

Kind regards
Annie

Hi

You might be interested in the following info related to William Ebbett.

He entered the CG Service, having served as a mariner on the Revenue Cruiser Lively, with a first posting to Hastings CG Station on 1 Oct 1836.

He was transferred from here to Portreath on 22 April 1837, then on 15 Sept 1848 to St Agnes. On the 26 July 1852 he was promoted to Commissioned Boatman (from Boatman) with a transfer to Coverack, from where he was superannuated on 31 July 1865.

During the Crimean War, because of a shortage of trained seaman, men from the CG Service were asked to serve in the Royal Navy. William was one such man, serving on HMS Royal George as an Able Seaman. For this service he was awarded the Baltic medal, which was sent to Falmouth in 1857.

Regards

Martin

Hi Martin.....thank you for the information you sent about William Ebbett and yes, was very pleased to receive it.  Where does one look to extract such information?  I am always amazed at what information is out there, but overwhelmed at times by the help given from kind folk such as yourself.

Take care and kind regards
Annie NZ

Trish..... thank you for all the information you sent.  Thomas Ebbet aged 2 in the 1861 census was Thomas Frederick Harris Ebbett who married wife (number 1 of 3) Grace Matthews and their son, George Matthews Ebbett immigrated to NZ and married Mary Albion Paul.  George and Mary are my husband's grandparents.

And yes, Charity Justice....what a fab name....worth a place in the family history book!

Thanks again and kind regards
Annie
