Almira Mallory/Kent James - Can anyone find her?
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 07:54 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors, Richard James, served in the Royal Artillery during the 1830s and 1840s.  His military records show he spent 10 3/4 years in Canada, but they don't say where in Canada.  While in Canada, he married Almira.  I have seen her first name on baptism certificates and censuses (after they emigrated to the US), but have never found where she is from.  Her daughters listed her last name as Mallory (oldest daughter) and Kent (second daughter), so I am not certain what her last name was.  (She was born about 1820-1822.)  She married Richard some time between 1833 and, I hope, Nov 1841, which is the latest date given for their first child's birth.  Samuel, this child, was taken back to England for baptism in 1843.  I have looked in the GRO Regimental marriages, but have not found anything and I have been told that the Artillery had too many units to find him that way.  (When he left the military, he is listed as serving in Company No. 5, 3rd Regiment, Royal Artillery if that helps any.)  I am at a complete loss and would appreciate any guidance, direction, or help!

I see them in 1850 in the States.  Did they remain in the States?  If so, have you tried tracing each child, to see if there might be some information about the mother's past?  (Hope that makes sense.)  You might get lucky and find a write-up about one of Almira's children, which might mention Almira's side of the family.

Thanks.  Yes, the family emigrated to the US in 1847 and I have traced each child, hoping to find some information on their mother (or father).  That's where I found that two daughters gave their mother a different last name.  She died while most of the children were young, so I don't know if they knew much about her.  Her oldest daughter called her Almira Mallory and she was almost seventeen when her mother died, so I think that is the correct name, but I don't know where the name Kent came from.  Another thought is that she was a very young widow and Kent was a first husband.
