McAvinue/McWilliams families
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 09:53 BST (UK) »
Hi from South Africa.
I am researching Robert Nathaniel McWilliams, born 1851 in Monaghan.
Parents Thomas McWilliams and Mary McAvinue.  the family was protestant.

Any info on these surnames would be most helpful.

thanks
Jenny

Do you have any other names within your McWilliams?

James for example, or other related surnames?

Unfortunately I only have the South African descendant names.  Robert Nathaniel McWilliams had 3 sons, Robert Frederick John, Thomas William and Stafford Charles Edgar.  there is a reference to his sister being a Mrs Borman.

I found a Thomas McWilliams of Town of Emyvale, Donagh, Monaghan in the Griffiths Valuation 1858-1860 but have no idea how to follow that info up as I have very little Knowledge of Ireland in general so am not sure how to proceed.  I thought his mother's name was fairly unusual, McAvinue, and was hoping someone might be able to help there.

Well you will definitely have to allow for variations in spelling, McAvinnie etc

Hi there,

I have just come across  Rootschat and joined and was very excited to find your posts about the Mcwilliams family as I have been searching for ages.  I am Robert Frederick John McWilliams grand-daughter, hopefully the same as you have mentioned.  They lived in the Eastern Cape.  My Mum was Phyllis Doreen McWilliams.
Have you got anymore info about the family in Ireland, would love to hear from you.

Best regards,
Avis

Hi Avis,
It does seem like it is the same family  :) but unfortunately I have not been able to find anything further on their Irish family other than the names I already mentioned.  I do have info on the South African families and would be happy to pass it on to you via an email.

regards
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I would love to have anything that you have.  I have some info on RJF (my grandfather) and a few other snippets of the family which I can pass onto you if you would like.  I was born in Port Elizabeth now living in New Zealand.  I think that there are graves in Kingwillianstown and RJF was in Grahamstown at some stage, as I have found his marriage record (not to my gran- but his 1st wife Emma Hayes McFarlane-she was a widow so perhaps her maiden surname was Hayes).      My gran was Hester Susanna (Elizabeth) Keet.
What part of the McWilliams family do you come from?   My Aunty Kathy McWilliams always said RJF came from Armagh so I was always on the wrong track.  She also said he was the eldest son from a 1st marriage?  Not sure how this works on Rootschat do I send you my email?
Looking forward to hearing from you
Avis :)
