Time Period For Inquest
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 18:54 BST (UK) »
Anyone know how long it would be between a death and the inquest, especially if there were suspicious circumstances?

One of my wife's ancestors committed suicide and we are having trouble finding out any information about the inquest.
I have been told that the inquest was held in Forthampton would this be the case?
We are looking at period 1946 - 1950.

I am also led to believe that it was in the Local Newspaper. Would this be the Gloucester Citizen?

It looks as it was the week following the death. So a very short period indeed!

Inquests are usually held very quickly after death, within a few days.    They aren't held on Sundays.

Some inquests - such as Princess Diana's - may be adjourned in order to gather evidence, find witnesses etc.

After all, until a cause of death has been ascertained a death cert cannot be issued which makes it difficult for relatives to collect insurance etc.

Inquests are usually held at the nearest local place of convenience big enough to hold it - often a local pub or village hall.
Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Hi

Inquests used to be held in the nearest local place of convenience, but you would expect through much of the C20th that inquests were increasingly held wherever possible, in an 'official building' where a court could be established, if a court building specifically built for that purpose was not available

The position in London in 1900.

'Formerly, the jury, after having "viewed the body," generally withdrew to some convenient room in a neighbouring tavern, where the court was held, at the close of which they not unnaturally, after such lugubrious duties, became convivially inclined, the sequel being a prolonged symposium in the bar-parlour.

This rarely happened by 1900; most of the London boroughs having properly-arranged Coroners' court-houses; if not, the inquiry took place in a town-hall or in the parish offices, now and again in a school or mission-room; at times in a hospital; and occasionally in a private dwelling.'
