COMPLETED - Bala and the Jones' - Updated

I'd like help locating information on Catherine and T R Jones, please.


According to the 1911 census a Catherine Jones (63 year old widow of private means) is living there with a domestic servant. The house is in Tegid Street, Bala and is found on Google maps.

I don't know who this person is and how she is associated with my Alexander Stewart Pratt and his mother. Mrs A. S. Pratt was staying at the house in 1917, with a Mrs T. R. Jones.

I was looking on Freecen, but don't know what district Bala comes under.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: I have found this information and hope someone has access to the 1901 census.

hi jamjar just been looking for alexander stewart pratt and he was in the 11th london regiment scottish rifles the medal roll says he died 24.3.17 and the correspondence is to mother a s pratt c/o mr t r jones plaryacre bala m wales

found some more, alexander stewart pratt died 24th march 1917, his rank was temp2/lieutenant his regiment was cameronians (scottish rifles), battalion was 12th battalion he was killed in action

Yes, that's correct Kerry.

I have all the information on Alexander and his family.

What I am trying to work out is the connection between his mother and the Jones'.

I don't know if Alexander was married, but doubt it.

His mother spent the best part of her life in Malta, so I don't get the Welsh connection.

Margaret nee Watt. She was Scottish. I have all the information on her except her death.

Could his mother have been a friend of Catherine's in the or could Alexander have been a friend of Catherine's son :

Possible marriage

Catherine White and Edward Jones 1872 Corwen

Catherine appears on the 1851, 1861, 1871, census' with her parents and numerous siblings at Rhydyglafes, Gwyddelwern.

Catherine's father was a farmer of 600 acres.

For the sons  Richard died 1910 in Bala
Two possible marriages for Robert - 1910 to a Maggie Davies in Corwen or 1913 to a Ethel B Jones in 1913 poss death in Wrexham, 1913

I still can't make the connection, though.

Now I need to discover who Mrs T R Jones is.

I'm wondering if Catherine died before your lot visited - and the Mrs T R Jones in 1917 had bought the house afterwards - from the census' it looks as if there were only two sons who look as if they had both passed away by then.........have you tried the local archive / record office in Dolgellau if you give them a ring and explain you're trying to trace the history of a house they may be able to help you. 

Local newspapers online are sometimes a help - I've discovered one of the people I'm researching who originated in suffolk living in LLandudno for 10 years and being very active in the social scene.

In the 1901 census - there are visitors next door and from listening to local historians in our area it was not unusual for local people to rent out their homes and live in a small section.
