Census Lookup Please 1851 (1841?) Dall
« on: Saturday 03 July 10 11:44 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

A bit of a long shot, but I am keen to find a Robert Dall and Margaret Dall (nee KERR) in the 1841 and 1851 census. They had a son called John Dall in 1787, so probably approaching 80 in 1841, therefore why I think it will be a long shot. The son was born in Ayr, and Robert Dall is not as rare as I thought.

Huge thanks for looking,

David :)

According to somebody at Ancestry, Robert was born in 1745 and died at Manchester in 1828.

They have Margaret's maiden name as Kayll and a parent search does indeed show children born to such a couple.

John's mother is definitely shown as Kerr though.

Robert Dall and Margaret Kayll had a daughter born Glasgow in 1785. Might be worth checking it at SP to see if it gives the father's occupation to compare with John's.

Hello,

Margaret Kayll is a strong possibility as her Grandson's middle name was Kayll.

Pleaqse excuse my ignorance, but what does SP stand for in this context ?

Many thanks for your information which is very useful

Best wishes,

David

Hello David,

SP = http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Here you can search, view and download Scottish birth/baptism, marriage and death records. You have to register and buy credits to view. Really good value at £6 for 30 credits.

John 'Westly' Dall's record is there in 1787 and will cost 6 credits to download.
As I said there is a 'Shusanna' (how it's indexed and not a typo) Dall born in 1785 at Lanarkshire who's mother is given as Margaret Kayll.

Sometimes these Old Parish Records don't give very much information but I am hoping both will show Robert's occupation and they will match.

There are another 2 children (extracted birth records) to the couple (mother's surname Kayll) at the Isle of Man - Elizabeth and James. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Hope this helps.

Actually your family seem to have an abundance of letters at The Lancashire Archives - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=055-ddx21&cid=-1#-1

There is a mention of a Robert Dall (brother/cousin ?) and wife Jane Pitcairn who both have wills indexed at SP. A search for him at Ancestry shows that he was a slave owner at Jamaica.

Looks like John was named after the famous minister but perhaps you know that. http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/famhist/families/kayle.htm

I think you have an interesting (but expensive) journey ahead.
