McDonaugh Family in Sligo
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 09:10 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm hoping somebody somewhere can help me! My Grt Gr-father was John McDonaugh born in Ireland(sligo) in approx 1868.He left and went to England and lived in Staffordshire with his wife Catherine Oakes and their 5 children (they had 2 more but they died as infants). My Grandfather was Michael McDonaugh married to Doris Johnson sons John and Michael and lived in Hanley, Staffordshire. In about 1948-1950 he got a visit from a cousin from sligo about taking over the family farm but unfortunately he couldn't and passed away not long afterwards. Needless to say we have no way of contacting any family members and find out where we actually come from. So if anyone can HELP PLEASE anything would be Appreciated

Welcome to Rootschat. First thing to do would be to trace John McDonaugh to an exact place in Ireland and then you can try to trace his relations in Sligo.
Civil registration of births started in 1864 so hopefully there will be a birth certificate for John. However, since there may ne more than one John McDonaugh born around the same time you need to have his something to verify you've found the correct person. What's John's father's name and occupation? (this should appear on his marriage certificate)

Added- just had a quick look at Irish births in LDS pilot site and there are lots of John McDonaughs born around 1868 in Sligo-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If they were in England before 1911, the census will say how many years married which should lead you to the marriage certificate and with a bit of luck the census might say where in Sligo he was born, even if it is only the parish it will be a great help.

Good luck,

J.T.A.
