Hi Bonti

I have checked the 1841 census for Penn in Cambridgeshire and there were no entries.

When you search Broome Hall references come up for a Broome Hall in Sheffield, Suffolk, Norfolk, Surrey and Canterbury.

There was a Broome Hall near Saffron Walden in Essex and this is the nearest I could find as it is about 30 minutes from Cambridge which if they were in London would have been the closest large town, and is on the Cambridge Road.

Thank you T.
Seems family stories might have been a bit twisted.
When you say there was a Broome Hall in Essex ........ Is it no longer?

I've found that folk overseas tend to think of London and UK as the same place. Same as Sydney is Australia, Johannesburg is South Africa.
Henry PENN's death notice has his place of birth as London ..... but perhaps it could also mean be any where in the UK.
In the 1841 Census there are two Henry PENNs that fit the approximate age -one born London (but married with family - not on my list of descendants) and one born in another county. So no leads there.  I went back to the family stories in the hope of finding a lead. This is what I have: "1) A property in the Fleetwood Docks in London. 2) Also a house in "chancery" 3) A house in England called Broome Hall - in Cambridge.
So far your answers are the closest I've had to a glimmer of hope of finding Henry's UK family.
Did the county border ever change in that Saffron Walden could've fallen into Cambridgeshire? Grasping at straws I know.
Thanks a million for all your help

Did your Henry Penn marry in England? If yes, to whom?

Do you know of any siblings?

Are you saying that the 1841 Census entry at HO107; Piece 725; Book: 4; Folio: 24; Page: 40 is not the Henry Penn you are looking for? If yes, what is the possible entry to which you are referring?

Saffron Walden is about 15 miles from Cambridge and near the Cambridgeshire border. However, I believe it has always been in Essex.

I don't kow if the county borders chaged- my guess is they did not- but it's easy to see how people assumed it is in Cambridgeshire. I've done this until it's just been pointed out.  It lies between Cambridge and London.
I'd think the Broome Hall you're looking for is the Saffron Walden one.

I am afraid I can't find a Broome Hall near Saffron Walden. Can you provide any further details?

There is Broome End Care Home at Pines Hill, Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex. Is this the place?
